I use my Garmin Colorado 400t mostly for geocaching. I use my bike mostly to stay in shape. With this bike mount kit I can now do both at the same time! Also, having a GPS on my handlebars is very convenient for when I am riding in unfamiliar territory and get a small turned around (O-K, lost).
The kit come with four plastic zip-lock ties, but you only need two and the others are spares. It was not as tight as I wanted it to be when I used only my fingers to tighten the straps so I used a pair of pliers to grab onto the strap and make it nice and snug. I then cut off the part of the straps sticking out in order to make it look nice.
Although it looks a small huge on the handlebars (see my photos above under “customer’s images”) it really is very practical to use and when I take it off I really don’t even notice the mount. The screen is O-K in bright light, but when it’s really overcast I turn on the GPS’s backlight.
If you have a Colorado unit and want to take it with you when biking, I would certainly recommend this gadget.
Garmin Colorado 400t Handheld GPS Unit with US Topographic Preloaded Maps
I tried a number of times to get the unit tightly attached to the handlebars using included and other ties I had. I couldn’t get it tight enough so that the unit wouldn’t rotate when going over bumps. It certainly needs a better attachment. I finally resorted to an ancient trip computer mount with screw attachment. I used the ties laterally on the unit mount and place the ties under the ancient mount – this holds the unit firmly. It works fine now. They should include a better attachment mechanism with this unit.
I attached this to the handlebars of my dual sport motorcycle. The mount is basically held on with zip ties. The ties appear to be of excellent quality, and I only used two of the four provided. I tugged on them hard with pliers to get them as tight as possible then snipped off the excess. Despite that, I can rotate the mount a bit, but that has turned out to be a excellent thing because it allows just enough slack to adjust the angle of my Oregon to prevent glare or optimize it for my riding position, but it’s still tight enough that it doesn’t go from where I set it. But, I can see how the mount would not work well with a bar that wasn’t around 1″ in diameter. I’ve driven with my Oregon mounted on the freeway at 75 mph and down bumpy dirt roads with no problems. I always make sure the GPS unit is firmly attached and seated in the mount. Without exercising that care, I can easily see myself failing to engage both grooves on the back of the GPS unit and having the unit drop off on the first bump encountered. I’m guessing that the ties might deteriorate over time, especially if exposed to a lot of sun, so it would probably be wise to inspect them frequently. Very pleased with the buy, which lets me navigate on my motorcycle.
